FFS READ collaboration

At a function in Port Shepstone early in 2009, FFS Refiners and READ Educational Trust handed over the first of 12 science libraries to rural schools in the Ugu district in Southern KZN.

The function was attended by science teachers, head masters and education department officials of the area. READ has developed a science literacy and education program for the disadvantaged rural schools. The program, drawn up by READ and funded by FFS as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility program, is aimed at improving the standard of science education by providing a science-focused reading library and an educator training program.

Each library is grade-specific with a range of 670 carefully chosen readers that cover the various topics of the curriculum. The libraries for each grade are housed in a sturdy box.

The books are chosen for their readability, appropriateness and visual impact. The first library for grade 4 focuses on the language or vocabulary of science, building up to the grade 7 library with science experiments and projects.

The educators’ training has already started with READ providing support for the use of the program throughout the year. The science teachers attended a two-day FFS-sponsored workshop where they worked through the program. This training was very well received, with participants requesting more time to complete the agenda.

In his presentation Don Hunter, Managing Director of FFS stressed the need for focus on education as the most fundamental path to poverty alleviation. “Without the ability to read and write one cannot hope to participate in the modern economy”.

Derek Potgieter, Educational Consultant of READ, also stressed the importance of science education and said that nearly everything to improve the quality of life requires science. From water treatment to sanitation, medicine to food production - all require a knowledge and understanding of science.
