FFS REFINERS' PRODUCT RANGE

FFS supply fit-for-purpose fuels that are used in a variety of applications, ranging from baking, glass melting, billet heating, steam raising, brick making, asphalt heating, power plant start-up and auxiliary power plant primary fuel. Special low sulphur fuels are produced for use in environmentally-sensitive urban areas (i.e. hospitals, bakeries, food processing, etc). FFS also produce high quality creosote-blend wood preservatives for the utility pole industry.

FUEL OIL 150 (FO150)

Origin
FO150 is a crude oil derived heavy fuel oil. This is the 'industry standard' fuel oil and is often referred to as Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO), Heavy Furnace Fuel (HFF) or Heavy Boiler Fuel (HBF).

Application
FO150 is typically used in larger applications such as larger boilers and for start-up fuel in coal-fired power stations. The alumina catalyst residue in the FCC main column bottoms that is typically blended into the FO150 by all South African refineries can cause nozzle and pump erosion problems, particularly in pressure jet burners. Small boilers may suffer from ash build-up due to catalyst fall out. FO150 must be heated for proper atomising.

Availability
FO 150 is available from all FFS branches throughout South Africa.

LOW SULPHUR OIL (LSO)

Origin
LSO is a blend of FO150 and various low sulphur components in order to achieve a low sulphur content fuel.

Application
LSO can be used in all FO150 applications where sulphur emissions are limited for environmental or corrosion reasons (e.g. air driers). As with FO150, residual catalyst particles from various refinery processes can lead to erosion and ashing problems in certain applications. LSO must be heated for proper atomising.

Availability
LSO is blended at our Cape Town, Chloorkop and Durban plants and is distributed countrywide by road tankers.

R50:50

Origin
R50:50 is produced from recovered lubricating, industrial and marine oils. These oils are re-refined using our dewatering and de-ashing processes and then blended to final product specification using higher value materials.

Application
The relatively high ash content of R50:50 (offset by lower pricing) limits its use to large and/or robust applications such as direct firing into asphalt kilns, brick ovens, billet re-heating and very large boilers (typically converted from coal) that are fuel-ash tolerant. R50:50 must be heated for proper atomising.

Availability
R50:50 is produced at FFS Refiners' Cape Town, Chloorkop and Durban plants and is distributed countrywide by road tankers.

LIGHT OIL 10 (LO10)

Origin
Recovered used lubricating oils are thermally cracked and distilled to provide a distillate which is blended with other low sulphur oils to produce LO10.

Application
LO10 is a cost effective, low sulphur alternative to Illuminating Paraffin (IP) and diesel in larger furnace applications. No lubricity additives are required and the higher density relates to a high volumetric energy value (compared to IP). LO10 is extensively used in small boilers, thermal oil heaters and other IP and diesel heating fuel applications where ash is a concern. No fuel heating is required for atomisation.

Availability
LO10 is manufactured at FFS Refiners' Cape Town and Pietermaritzburg plants and is distributed countrywide by road tankers.

LIGHT OIL 2

Origin
Low flashpoint distillate hydrocarbons from various refinery processes.

Application
LO2 is a cost effective, low flashpoint, low sulphur fuel suitable for larger applications that require a clean and light fuel and where the risks associated with the low flashpoint can be properly mitigated. It is particularly suited to multiple small burner furnaces such as brick kilns.

Availability
LO2 is supplied out of our Cape Town and Pietermaritzburg plants and is distributed countrywide by road tankers.

COAL TAR FUEL (CTF)

Origin
CTF is produced from tar and distillates derived from coal gasification, coke and char production processes.

Application
CTF is mainly used in operations that require a high luminosity / radiance (glass melting, billet heating, smelting and asphalt industries). The high radiance makes it less suitable for smaller boilers as damage to the firing tubes can occur if not properly controlled.

Availability
Tar is produced at the FFS Evander plant and is distributed countrywide by road tankers.

COATING OIL

Origin
Coating Oil is blended from various oxygenated waxes and paraffinic oils to the customer's pour point specification.

Application
Coating Oil is specifically designed as a fertiliser anti-caking compound, where high pour point is a definite requirement. This high pour point requires transportation in insulated road tankers and heating during storage and application.

Availability
Coating Oil is manufactured at the FFS Durban plant and is distributed countrywide by road tankers.

WOOD PRESERVATIVE CREOSOTE (WP1 AND WP2)

Origin
Wood Preservative Creosote is produced from tar and distillates derived from coal gasification, coke and char production processes.

Application
FFS Refiners' superior grade of Wood Preservative Creosote WP1 (product specification to SANS 616:2008, type 3) provides long-term retention with less migration, less evaporation and a drier finish in the treating process of timber poles, giving exceptional protection against termite and fungal attack. This product has been shown by research to provide exceptional service life.

WP2 is produced for export and re-packaging / blending. WP2 does not carry the SABS mark of conformance and does not necessarily conform to SANS 616:2008, type 3.

Availability
Wood Preservative Creosote is produced at the FFS Evander plant in Mpumalanga and is distributed countrywide by road tankers.
