OVERVIEW
There
are four processes within the plant, which are tailored to handle the various
feedstocks. Products from this plant are used in steel and glass making, and
other industrial furnace applications. Much of the work is in response to
environmental clean-up requirements.
PRODUCTS
The
Evander plant produces coal tar fuel, LSO (low sulphur fuel oil), R50:50S, and
pitch which is used in blast furnaces for steel manufacture. For full
specifications and a description of these products, click

FEEDSTOCKS
The
Evander plant's raw materials fall into four categories:
Coal tars, which
are produced during the gasification process and prior to FFS adding value to
them, were dumped over a number of years.
Synthetic oils, which are a
by-product of the Sasol gas synthetic fuel process.
Coal tar pitch, the
residue from the distillation of coal tar. This has a melting point of >80°C,
and poses its own particular handling problems.
Coal tar sludges, separated
out from the coal tar during purification, which is recovered and utilised as a
boiler fuel.
QUALITY CONTROL
The Evander plant's laboratory can do standard oil tests, such
as viscosity, flash and pour point, ash, matter insoluble in toluene (MIT) and
moisture. The laboratory can simulate sedimentation rates in hot spin
centrifuges developed by FFS for this purpose. This laboratory also does quality
control testing for the coal tar filtration plant, and has additional equipment
for that purpose.
