OVERVIEW
The
FFS Cape Town plant produces low sulphur fuel oils from a blend of synthetic
oil, Fuel Oil 150, and used oils. The plant uses centrifuges, evaporators and
distillation-cracking units to produce high-grade fuels for environmentally
sensitive applications.
PRODUCTS
The
Cape Town plant produces LSO (low sulphur fuel oil), R50:50C, LO10 and FO150.

FEEDSTOCKS
The Cape Town plant's primary feedstocks are:
-
Synthetic oils, which are by-products from the
PetroSA oil-from-natural-gas plant in Mossel Bay. These products are
sulphur-free.
-
Heavy fuel oils, derived from marine and
industrial applications.
-
Heavy fuel oils, derived from crude oil
refining.
-
General industrial oils, such as tank bottoms
cleanings, interceptor skimmings, and drum washing residuals.
-
Used lubricating oils from industrial,
gearboxes, hydraulic applications and automotive uses.
-
Fuel Oil 150. This is used as a blend stock.
-
Ship Slops collected from Cape Town Harbour
under the Marpol Agreement.
EFFLUENT TREATMENT
The aqueous effluent is processed through a comprehensive
water effluent plant, which includes a dissolved air flotation oil separator as
a final stage and is then disposed of to the municipal sewer. Aqueous effluent
is accepted from industry and processed and disposed of for a nominal fee.
QUALITY CONTROL
The Cape Town plant has a well equipped laboratory which is
able to do standard oil tests, such as viscosity, flash and pour point, ash,
matter insoluble in quinoline (MIQ) and water content. In addition, the
laboratory is capable of testing for sulphur content using a Leco analyser.
ENVIRONMENTAL
This plant has SANS ISO 14001 accreditation for its
environmental management system.
