FFS REFINERS
ISO 14001 ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Growing concern over the impacts of various activities on the environment and the need to control them to facilitate sustainable development was the backdrop to FFS Refiners' commitment to implementing an ISO 14001 environmental management system in all four processing plants. Each of these plants were certified ISO 14001 in late 1999, and FFS Refiners was one of the few companies to have been certified ISO 14001 in that year. The environmental management system has been in place since 1999 and has changed and improved over the years. The system enables the company to manage and limit the impacts of their products, activities and services as well as enabling the development of more efficient processes through continuous improvement. Storage tank farm facilities are available in Port Elizabeth, Richards Bay, Cape Town and Durban, all of which have an environmental management system based on ISO 14001.
A new tar processing plant was commissionined in 2007 in Evander and is presently preparing for ISO 14001 certification in 2009.
THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TEAM
In order to make the ISO 14001 environmental management system effective and efficient, it is vital to have a dedicated and enthusiastic team. Not only is it imperative to have buy-in from ground staff and management but also from the team that will drive the system in each of FFS Refiners' branches. This team is composed of the following dedicated employees:
The Company Environmental Manager who has overall responsibility of all environmental management systems as well as environmental legal compliance within the company, ensuring that the system is maintained, audited and improved;
Environmental Management System Administrators who are responsible for the day to day operation of the system in conjunction with the Branch Environmental Officers who are responsible for environmental matters within the branch as well as the overall site management of the environmental management system.
