SOCIAL
FFS believes that it has a fundamental responsibility to assist in improving the lives of disadvantaged individuals in South Africa. It is therefore involved in several social programmes:
CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENT POLICY
FFS Refiners has an active Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme focusing on developing and empowering the communities in which it operates through investment in education and technical skills training, environmental conservation and community development.
BLACK ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
FFS subscribes to the need to promote economic empowerment of previously disadvantaged people.
FFS EXPO FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS
FFS sponsors this extremely valuable initiative to foster and develop science amongst our school learners. The objective is to encourage learners to investigate, experiment, analyse, hypothesise and conclude on a wide range of topics of personal interest and then to write and present the project for adjudication. This process of scientific investigation is often the catalyst for developing a passion for science that may lead to a tertiary education in the sciences or engineering and a rewarding career in the many technical and scientific opportunities that exist. The EXPO is run by a dedicated group of science teachers and university science educators on a voluntary basis. It was established in 1983 and has grown into a world-class event, where over 650 projects are prepared and presented annually by more than 1000 participants. The judging is carried out by a voluntary group of educators as well as industrial scientists and engineers. Each participant receives a certificate of participation, and a number of bronze, silver and gold medals are awarded to those projects of merit. Prizes are plentiful and the event is always very memorable to the learners.
