FFS PRODUCTS

FFS fuels are used in a variety of applications, ranging from baking bread, to melting glass, billet heating, steam raising, brick making, and powering marine diesel engines. Special low sulphur fuels are made for use in environmentally sensitive areas, such as hospitals and bakeries, in urban areas.

Fuel Oil 150 (FO 150)

Origin
FO 150 (Fuel Oil) is derived from crude oil and is available from an inland refinery with extremely high desulphurisation and hydro-cracking capabilities, hence the low sulphur level. FO 150 from coastal refineries is also available, but the sulphur level is higher at ~3.5 %.

Application
FO 150 is used in more robust applications such as start-up fuel for coal-fired power stations and in large boilers with rotary-cup type burners. The residual FCC catalyst, from FCC slurry typically blended into the FO 150 by all refineries, could present nozzle erosion problems when used with pressure jet burners. Small boilers could suffer from ash build up due to the FCC alumina catalyst presence. FO 150 from coastal refineries could present an environmental problem in sulphur sensitive areas, while that from the inland refinery is often located too far from these users. Heating is required to reach proper atomising conditions.

Availability
FO 150 is available from all FFS branches throughout South Africa.

Low Sulphur Oil (LSO)

Origin
LSO is a blend of FO 150 and various low sulphur components in order to achieve a continuous "less than 2% S" product. These low sulphur components include waxy oils from the Sasol coal gasification and synthesis process, the PetroSA gas and condensate refinery, as well as other low sulphur oils.

Application
LSO is used in all FO 150 applications where sulphur emissions are limited for environmental or corrosion reasons (eg. air driers), although very low, residual catalyst particles from the various refinery processes could lead to similar erosion and ashing problems in certain applications, as is the case with FO 150. Trace heating and lagging of exposed piping is required in most areas due to the high pour point caused by the presence of various waxy components. Heating is required to reach proper atomising conditions.
Specifications of this product.

Availability
LSO is blended at both FFS Cape Town and Durban branches and is distributed countrywide by road tankers.

R50:50

Origin
FFS Refiners provides a cost effective service to industry and shipping under the Marpol Agreement in the removal of their waste oils and slops that would otherwise have found its way into the environment or unnecessarily filling expensive classified landfill sites. R 50:50 is blended from these re-refined (dehydrated, de-ashed, centrifuged and filtered) products.

Application
Due to a somewhat high ash content, this product is limited to large and/or robust applications such as direct firing into asphalt kilns, brick ovens, billet re-heating and very large boilers (typically converted from coal) where ash removal is not critical. The relatively low price makes it attractive to cost sensitive users, while the low sulphur content is a definite advantage in environmentally sensitive areas. Heating is required to reach proper atomising conditions.
Specifications of this product.

Availability
R50:50 is blended at both FFS Cape Town and Durban branches and is distributed countrywide by road tankers.

Coating Oil

Origin
Coating oil is blended from various oxygenated waxes and paraffinic oils to the customer's pour point specification.

Application
Coating oil is specifically designed as a fertiliser anti-caking compound, where high pour point is a definite requirement. This high pour point requires transportation in insulated road tankers and heating during storage and application.
Specifications of this product.

Availability
Coating oil is manufactured at the FFS Pietermaritzburg plant and is distributed countrywide by road tankers.

R 20:20

Origin
Contaminated light oils are collected from industry and re-refined (dehydrated as well as de-ashed) to be blended into R 20:20.

Application
R 20:20 is a low cost alternative to Illuminating Paraffin (IP). The higher energy value due to the higher density, as well as its inherent lubricity, which makes the use of lubricity enhancers unnecessary, makes it even more cost effective. Compared to IP, the higher sulphur and ash levels do limit its application. R 20:20 is used in small non-ferrous billet heating furnaces.
Specifications of this product.

Availability
R20:20 is blended at both FFS Cape Town and Durban branches and is distributed countrywide by road tankers.

Light Oil 10 (LO 10)

Origin
Recovered used lubricating oils are thermally cracked and distilled to provide a distillate which is blended with other low sulphur oils to produce LO 10. The final product is filtered through 20-micron filters before being despatched.

Application
LO 10 is a cost effective, low sulphur alternative to Illuminating Paraffin (IP). No lubricity enhancers are required and the higher density relates to a higher volumetric energy value if compared to IP. LO 10 is extensively used in the baking industry, in small boilers where ash is a concern, and all other IP and diesel heating fuel applications. No heating is required during the application.
Specifications of this product.

Availability
LO 10 is manufactured at both FFS Cape Town and Pietermaritzburg factories and is distributed countrywide by road tankers.

Coal Tar Fuel

Origin
Coal gasification tar from the Sasol process as well as various char producers throughout the country is dehydrated and de-ashed at the FFS Evander operation.

Application
CTF is mainly used in operations that require a high luminosity, such as the glass melting industry. The high radiance makes it unsuitable for normal boilers as damage to the firing tube may occur when not properly controlled.
Specifications of this product.

Availability
Tar is produced at the FFS Evander factory. Significant volumes of a CTF product with extremely fine (< 10 micron) iron catalyst at levels of 1 - 1.5% is also available.

Brick Furnace Fuel (BFF)

Origin
BFF is a heavy to medium creosote blend produced by the vacuum distillation of Coal Gasifier Tar. This material is despatched from Evander.

Application
The high aromatic content makes BFF a high radiant fuel. It is extremely efficient in the brick making industry.
Specifications of this product.

Availability
BFF is manufactured at Evander and is distributed countrywide by road tanker.
